Professor John Whiteman presents a personal view on various aspects of and the background to the Cathedral and its glass.
Starting with a short review of Coventry history, the talk will consider the three cathedrals of Coventry, the industrial background, the Coventry blitz and its effect and the challenges that arose in the construction of the new cathedral, focusing on the glass and its significance.
The Whiteman family business, Glass Coventry Ltd (now Solaglas Ltd) was closely involved with the glass of the “new” cathedral during its construction and John therefore brings a unique perspective to the subject. John is currently the Distinguished Professor of Computational Mathematics at Brunel University London and one of his research projects concerns the fracture of glass. He is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London.
