Staying on a war footing, the mound to your right was a WW2 air raid shelter (one of at least sixteen dug in Kenilworth in 1939). Now sealed up, it would have accommodated 50 people in a space 30 feet long and 7 feet high.
The shelters were closed after the War and bricked up in 1952. Some were demolished, but in 1969 a circular from the Home Office stated that all surviving air raid shelters were to be retained unless they were unsound, a danger to health or in the way of development. The one here on Forrest road was concreted shut, it was inspected in the early 2000’s and found to be flooded.
Continue Northwest along Castle Road. Turn left at the small lane and bear right behind the houses through the woodland. On leaving woods turn right.
These trails follow the same route as the leaflets but provide more detailed and deeper information at each point of interest (and we will keep adding more as we go!).
Please note – these trails are developed and optimised for a mobile experience so may not work effectively on bigger screen sizes.
