7. The Paling

Bluebells in Crackley Wood by Sue Steward

Here is the boundary between two ancient hunting grounds, Castle Chase ahead and Honiley Chase where you have just walked, once fenced by a “Paling” to stop animals escaping. This is where the term “beyond the Pale”, (meaning unimaginable, unknown originates).  The tiny remnant of woodland to your left has old ponds, plus wood anemone, cowslips, violets, and bluebells in season.

Onward Directions

Follow the path straight ahead, through the kissing gate, then carry on with the recently planted woodland to your right. Another stile leads you to the Pleasance, a grassy area with undulating earthworks. It can be muddy, and there may be a small stream to cross, so take care.
